In 2004 a large holding of first day covers with fake cachets appeared from nowhere. As the result of the efforts of a number of FDC collectors and dealers, it had been beleived that most of these covers had been removed from the marketplace.
Over twenty years later, some of these covers have re-appeared and many collectors are seeing these fakes for the first time.
For that reason I am making available the section from my FDC Exhibiting book that discusses the 2004 event as methods on how to handle bogus cachets in an exhibit. In addition, I've uploaded the original Carol Shelton article that appeared in Linn's (August 9, 2004) that describes what heppened in great detail.
